  • 1 double bed, 1 double futon. A single Futon Company sleepover mat can be added.

Not suitable for pets

Kids are welcome, but pets are not allowed in Stuc a-Chroin. However, pets are allowed at Ben Lomond.

One of the three Trossachs yurts. A cosy camp in a haven of arts and creativity...

The three Trossachs yurts are a fusion of Kyrgyk design and local materials which create a homely, earthy feel. Thick rugs, felt wall-hangings and wood-burning stoves add touches of comfort to the traditional Kyrgyzstani dwellings. Ben Ledi and Ben Lomond yurts share the woodland just a little way on from Stuc a’Chroin yurt and the two together make a great family camp.

In each yurt there is a double bed and a double futon, plus a single sleepover mat which can be added for an extra child so they can sleep a family of five. From the boardwalk leading to the well equipped communal kitchen, there are impressive views across Flanders Moss National Nature Reserve, from which West Moss-Side Organic Farm, the home of Trossachs Yurts, takes its name.

There are arts and crafts courses aplenty at The West Moss-side Centre (a renovated 19th century steading and art gallery) including willow weaving, rushwork, felt crafting, and batik dye work. You can request a special treatment, a yoga course or even an accompanied wild swim! Beef from the cattle that graze on the moss, and both home-made bread and very local, seasonal produce from the organic kitchen garden are available for guests to buy. With all this plus the beauty of the lochs and the mountains of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park to explore, you won't be short of ways to make your stay memorable. Don’t forget that you are just one hour from Glasgow and Edinburgh and close to Stirling too.

Our guests say...

It was wonderfully quiet with birds chirping every morning, slightly cold and snowy but the yurt kept us warm with its felt walls, mass amounts of blankets, and wood burning stove. Kate was amazing and taught me some crafting and checked up with us every morning when we said hello to the cows. Thornhill was fairly centrally located between so many small and large cities that we were never lacking new places to see or new food to eat. Overall, I didn't want to leave.

We had the most lovely stay at the yurt. Kate was so willing to help with all we needed but left us free to have our own space and wonder around the farm too- lots of new calves had just arrived which was lovely! Definitely recommend. Really cosy space with everything we needed.

We had a wonderful stay, with our 2 girls. The yurts were extremely well equipped, the bathroom and kitchen block were modern and had everything we needed. It was great that the loos are near to the yurt, handy with children! The yurt was warm and cosy, and waterproof even with heavy rain. The yurts are in a remote and tranquil setting, yet easy driving distance to lots of beautiful walks, castles, lochs etc.

Stayed for 2 nights with parter and 12 year old son to go off digital grid and explore Scotland. Beautiful location really secluded we were so happy with the location and the yurt itself is decorated tastefully with everything you need for the perfect family weekend.

We had a great time. The yurts and facilities are really clean and "easy" to use. Kate is lovely and very friendly. The meat and bread were also very tasty.

Absolutely amazing! We will return. The yurt was fabulous and Kate wonderful.

The yurt was magical! The farm where the yurt is set is active and so interesting, especially for children. The yurt was immaculately clean and the word burner was so clean you'd have thought it was brand new!!

We had a perfectly peaceful few days staying in a beautiful yurt in the lovely Scottish countryside. The host was very kind and welcoming and the facilities were fantastic. I loved the experience of staying somewhere a little bit different, but with all your home comforts close at hand. The yurt was beautifully decorated and well-equipped and the farm location was fun and peaceful. I can't wait to go back!

It was a wonderful place to stay. Kate (the farm owner) was great and very helpful to make our stay as smooth as possible. The kids loved it to bits & also enjoyed the walk tour we had around the farm and having face to face experience with the cows & sheep. It was a nice experience and we would surely recommend it to our friends.

Really great time with the kids in a warm and friendly setting and fabulous yurt,

Wonderful place to chill and unwind off grid! Loved all the little features and the farm environment

We had a wonderful relaxing holiday. Kate, the owner was very welcoming and helpful. All our needs were totally catered for. Will be back for sure and have recommended the yurts to friends and family and the canopy and stars website.

Our stay was very enjoyable and relaxing. We were welcomed by Kate and she made every effort to make us feel at home. She was always there to assist us and offer advice regarding our location.

Had a brilliant time, the setting is just beautiful and our host is amazing. The yurt is really cosy even in a thunder storm, the sound of the rain was wonderful.Had an amazing experience which has left me with a good sense of well-being.

'We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the yurt.' Read Sarah's blog post about her stay:

"It was excellent, great facilities and well looked after.  Kate was really friendly but left us to do as we pleased. Would definitely go back!"

"Our stay was beautifully relaxing, our host was absolutely fantastic and our break was completely perfect and without fault! Definitely highly recommended!"

"We had a great few days, the Yurt was very comfortable and warm and was clean and well equipped.  The location was great and Kate, the owner, was the perfect host."

"We LOVED our stay. Kate has an amazing place at West Mosside farm - it is impossible not to slow down and relax. Our yurt was so cosy in the evenings with candles lit, the log burner going and the rain hitting the ceiling. We've been telling everyone about it."

"Very much so. It was a very special occasion and we had to trust we were doing the right thing. Great communication with Kate beforehand and I felt reassured. She could not do enough for us while we were there, the result a magical celebration for my in-laws celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary and disabled brother in law."

"Absolutely brilliant"

"We had the most fabulous weekend at Trossachs Yurts.  It was totally different from anything we have done before.  It was so peaceful and well thought out.  I loved the fact there was no electricity in the Yurt, we relaxed, read books, talked, things that we rarely seem to get time to do at home.  I don't know if it was the pregnancy hormones, but I cried for an hour on my way home as I didn't want to leave!"

"We all had the most fantastic time! Kate was a wonderful host, with a warm welcome for us, time to stop and chat with our children, and recommendations for places for us to see/things to do. The yurt was warm and cosy, well furnished and provided with sufficient cooking pots, dishes and crockery for all of us. The woodburning stove was beautiful, and the supply of logs and kindling adequate for our stay - even when our son turned his hand to lighting the fire for us!! The location was fantastic, the peace and quiet superb, and the views breathtaking !And the best thing = the reevaluation of what is important - staying in the yurt has made us all, including the children, appreciate each other more, and aim to do more things together as a family, without the distractions of TV, computers etc. Now we just need to sort out a return trip...!"

"We cannot have imagined a more perfect place to spend our wedding night.  The yurt was the most enchanting of places to be on our first night of married life and thank you Kate for the finishing touches and keeping the fire going for when we got back here in the small hours of New Year’s Day."

Barbara & Joe

"My family thought I was mad to consider staying in a yurt in wintertime – but as we pack up now they agree it was the best idea I had in a long time. Kate is amazing, a really jolly character who met us when we arrived and gave us a full tour of the yurt and the facilities we could use. The yurt itself has everything you could want – a real home away from home. We ate at the Lion and Unicorn one night (highly recommended) but our second night we had Kate’s own beef sausages and burgers cooked in the yurt!! What a treat."

"It was the best fun ever. We saw Highland cattle and also Loch Katrine was beautiful. The camp site was just amazing the yurt is so fun. We bought some marshmallows and popped them on the fire and they were really good fun."

Courses & classes

Batik, Trossachs Yurts, Stirling

Batik on Silk 22nd April

An introduction to the basic techniques for batik with Libby Yule, an artist and textile designer who is inspired by the natural world and particularly the landscape and flowers of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park.

Japanese Block Printing

Japanese Block Printing 12th/13th May

This is a new and exciting workshop for West Moss-side. Elspeth Lamb works with woodcuts of the Japanese Ukiyo-e tradition. These are absolutely stunning but quite different from European woodcuts. This is because of the ink (watercolour paint) which is used. This will be a true Japanese experience using the traditional knives and of course special fine Japanese kozo papers.

Willow PIg

Willow Garden Pigs 2nd / 3rd June

This two-day weekend workshop will focus on making a fine willow pig. The techniques involved will major on random weave and three dimensional structures although the detail of the nose and ears (!) will have you using other weaving techniques.

Forth Valley Open Studios at West Moss-side Centre.  Not to be missed – exhibition of work by Darren Rees, Graham Tristram and Charmian Pollok

Small Frame egg basket –Sat 15th September

This one day workshop will introduce you to the technique of frame basket work. Using mainly willow with the opportunity of incorporating some hedgerow material  you will learn how to construct the ribs of the frame, weave between the ribs to create the basket and put on a little handle.

This two-day workshop will introduce you to basic skills for small-scale sculpting with willow. At the end of the weekend  you should have acquired the techniques to make your own sculptures. The session will centre around each participant constructing their own willow chicken or goose.  The weekend  celebrates the return of the pink footed geese from the Arctic Circle, back to West Moss-side for the winter.

Scottish Birch Bark Craft – Sat 8th December
Weaving with the bark is like working with soft leather, the roots are strong, white, long and slender and the twigs give structure to the objects. The Birch tree provided all that was needed for life and work in Northern Scandinavia - baskets, buckets, containers, shoes, mats and so on and so on. Bryce uses many of the designs and techniques in his work and he has a fund of knowledge about the tree and its uses which he will share. . Come for the day – Sorry Yurts will be packed away!  Lessons learnt from 2011.

During the day Kate will introduce you to the techniques of weaving, braiding and plaiting to make unusual pieces. This is a day which combines techniques from a variety of crafts and materials (New Zealand flax, river rush, birch craft, straw, and willow craft) but using soft rush, fine willow and some moss collected from Flanders Moss and the farm. There will be a festive farmhouse lunch. Come for the day – sorry Yurts will be packed away!  Lessons learnt from 2011.

Meet your hosts

Kate Sankey

In a secluded corner of Flanders Moss National Nature Reserve and at the gateway to Loch Lomond is West Moss-side, an organic farm that has been under the ownership of Kate Sankey for almost 20 years. In the last four years she has been opening up this hidden idyl to a select few. Kate is keen to share the cultural heritage of the site which she has given her own modern style. Trossachs Yurts fits perfectly with this ethos. Built using the finest elm, ash and oak in a 1000 year old design, the luxury yurts also provide all the comforts needed to be homely in modern Scotland.

West Moss-side started life as a mixed organic farm, which is being transformed into a venue for experiences. The 19th Century farm steading is now a centre for activities of all kinds, attracting the very best educators, tutors and adventurers to share their knowledge. The farm retains its eco-credentials in a number of innovative ways and is home to a rare breed of native Shetland cattle that are vital for the conservation of the mossy environment and not just for show.

In the Centre there is an exhibition of paintings including work by Darren Rees, Graham Tristram and other artists. Unique pieces by Paper Maker and Print artist Charmian Pollok’s and willow weaver/artist Georgia Crook are also exhibited and a willow pig by Anthea Naylor greets guests.

West mossside

Environmental policy

West Moss-side source all materials as sustainably as possible. All the decking for the yurts is sourced from used scaffolding boards and the yurtplatforms are reused exterior ply-boards. The working farm is of course organic while the small herd of native Shetland cattle are very important for the conservation of the farm's habitat. They form an elegant solution for keeping back the rough grasses and regenerating birch trees which threaten to take over the moss by simply eating them. The cattle also form part of the policy for sourcing food and drink - it must all be local!

The Flanders Moss National Nature Reserve forms a curious environment with domes of peat rising gently from the ground. Squelchy, colourful mats of sphagnum moss cover these bumps, hence the name of both the reserve and farm. It's the perfect environment for lizards, adders, snipe, stonechat and deer. The farm is also home to skylarks, meadow pipits and receives visits from many bumble bees in the summer.

Booking Terms

Canopy & Stars low price promise
Book with us in confidence knowing you won’t find that place cheaper elsewhere. All of the prices we display are set and matched by our Owners. (In this world of foreign currency, we do have to say 'subject to exchange rates' for some of our European places.)

What does ‘from price’ mean?
Our ‘from price’ is based on a four night stay in low season and designed to help you to compare different prices across our collection. Some of our Owners vary their nightly rates and check in days throughout the year, so it may differ from the rate quoted below the calendar. It is quite common (although by no means universal) for places to charge a little more in peak season or for shorter stays, to cover changeover costs. We do not exclude or limit any liability for death or personal injury that arises as a result of our negligence or that of any of our employees whilst acting in the course of their employment.

8. Pets

Not all properties accept pets. If you wish to take your pet on holiday, please advise us before booking and we can check whether pets are accepted at the property. You must obtain the prior consent of the Owner before taking any pets to the property. A nightly charge may be made by the Owner for each pet and additional terms may apply.

9. VAT

Many of the Owners of properties in the Canopy & Stars portfolio are not registered for VAT in which case no tax is payable. Where VAT is payable, the tax is included in the advertised holiday rental price.

10. Visa, passport and health requirements.

Unless you tell us otherwise, we assume that all members of your party are British citizens who hold or will hold full British passports valid for the entire duration of the Arrangements you chose to purchase. Information on visa, passport and health requirements, where given and applicable, is so given on this basis. Requirements may change and you are therefore strongly recommended to check the up to date position with the Owner of the Booking, Passport Office, appropriate embassy or consulate or your doctor as applicable in good time before the commencement of your holiday.

11. Insurance

You are strongly recommended to take out personal travel insurance for all members of your party. It is your responsibility to ensure that the insurance you purchase is adequate and appropriate for your particular needs. Please read your policy details and take them with you on holiday.

12. Special requests

If you have any special requests (for example dietary requirements, cots or room location), please let us know at the time of booking. We will pass on all such requests to the Owner, but unfortunately, we can't guarantee that they will be met and we will have no liability to you if they are not.

13. Group Bookings

Not all Owners accept Bookings for a single sex group (for example, a stag or hen party). Guests wanting to make such a Booking should check with us beforehand to enable us to check whether the Owner is prepared to accept the Booking. We will then advise you accordingly. In event that an Owner does not accept this type of Booking then it is with regret, that the Booking may be cancelled and cancellation fees may apply. It is the Guest’s responsibility to enquire with Canopy & Stars and/or check on our website beforehand to make sure that this type of booking is permitted.

14. Maximum Numbers

Please note that except by prior arrangement confirmed in writing, only the number of persons specified on a booking confirmation may occupy  a property. Most owners reserve the right to refuse admittance or revoke a booking if this condition is not observed and you are unlikely to receive any refund.

15. Your Responsibilities

Please note that you have a contract with the Owner of the property. As such you are under a responsibility to behave in a proper, appropriate and legal manner whilst staying at the property with due respect to the Owner, the Property and other guests and their property. You are responsible for informing the Owner of any losses or damage to the property as soon as possible. Please note that you will be liable to pay the Owner for any losses or damage to the property caused by you or a member of your party (except reasonable wear and tear). Some Owners will also require damage deposits. You must also leave the property by the check-out time specified on your booking. If any guest behaves inappropriately or improperly (of which the Owner will be the final judge on their Property), or illegally, the Owner reserves the right to ask the guest and their party (at their discretion) to leave the Property before the end of the holiday period and/or refuse any future bookings from you.  Any refund for so doing will be at the entire discretion of the Owner. In addition, the Owner reserves the right to sue the guest for any loss, damage or injury caused to the Owner, the Property or to other guests and/or their property. As agent, we will have no liability to you in these circumstances.

16. Governing Law and Jurisdiction

These terms and conditions have been drafted in accordance with and are governed by English law and the courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction in relation to any and all disputes arising out of these Agency Terms & Conditions.

17. Discrepancies

In case of a discrepancy between these Agency Terms & Conditions and any other Canopy & Stars literature, these Agency Terms & Conditions shall prevail.

18. Validity clause

In the event that a court finds that a condition in these Agency Terms & Conditions is illegal or void, the illegal or void provision will be severed from the remainder of the Agency Terms & Conditions, which will continue to be valid and have full force and effect.
